Two major activities of REDI related to eco-housing include the manufacturing and sales of low cost building material, and providing heat protective material for reducing indoor air temperature of houses built with galvanized tin roofs. Low cost concrete poles are introduced, as a substitute for traditional bamboo poles, in the Southern Islands, where households are vulnerable to high winds and natural calamities. Use roof coating material with higher heat reflectivity is an effective means of reducing high temperature. REDI introduces this material for rural homes that are remotely located without the provision of electricity, and therefore unable to use fans for cooling. Reduced temperature with a coated roof will improve the level of comfort and concentration of the children in these school buildings at a low cost and without any active cooling mechanism.
